I watch her eyes as she watches the news.
I watch the fear almost spilling out.
Behind the glass windows –
A horror movie.
A helpless ninety year old woman –
Beaten in her bed.
Wheelchairs parked in the middle of the night –
In the corridor.
Slumping wrinkled bodies sleeping –
In the wheelchairs in the corridors
In the middle of the night.
I watch her eyes –
The fear that I will give her up one day
When she’s no longer useful
When she’s no longer loved
When she becomes just an empty body and a –
Burden.
I watch her eyes and I –
Take her hand.
“Mama, you will always be loved.
Mama, you will always be home.
Your wrinkled body is my sanctuary
Your wrinkled body is my –
Home.
Mama, you will always be loved.
You will always be home.”
When it’s time to go home,
I hold her fragile body close to me, kiss her cheek,
Whisper in her ear: “I will see you tomorrow.”
